I was honoured to have been invited by my friend and colleague, Ms. Catherine Blake, CEO, Sales Protocol Consultants who teaches  The Business of Sales at the Whittemore School of Business & Economics, University of New Hampshire recently.  We had a fabulous afternoon and evening reviewing key topics pertaining to Professional Presence as well as an amazing catered dinner and Dining Savvy tutorial. 

With the support of Dr. Tom Gruen, Dr. Nelson Barber, Dr. Kuo, Mr. John Cote, Mr. John Lilly, and Ms. Jarlene Hatfield from UNH Dining Services, the evening was quite a success!  Ms. Blake has told us that more than one student thought it was one of the most memorable experiences they have had at UNH.

People of major religions around the world have just celebrated the highest holidays in their faith, and before we bypass theses days and begin to prepare for the upcoming graduation season and summer vacations, let us pause and reflect. How do we select heroes in our lives? Are they people of great character? Are they people with high moral standards? Are they teachers and leaders?

Have we noticed that many of our (former) sports heroes, leading political figures, religious heads and people in our everyday lives have fallen from grace and disappointed us? As we identify people to serve as role models in our lives, let's take care and recognize the characteristics that we truly wish to emulate.

At Protocol Consultants International, our call for a Day of Civility depends on your commitment and active participation. You can make that commitment, by choosing carefully, the people who you call "role models" in your lives!

When "casual day" enters our language, we lose the formality that is so important in business relationships. I contend that the English language itself has become compromised.  When the media, once considered to be 'the standard,' address senior executives and even heads of state as "you guys" it is no wonder that we hear greetings such as:  "hey dude, where you at?" or "hey guys, whas-up?" at work.   And, how did "Have a nice day!" become "ave a goo wooh."

Let's do our part, starting today, to interact with co-workers, subordinates and seniors in a civil manner, and extend our Call for Civility in the workplace.

How we react to bad manners demonstrates our maturity; our ability to deal with an ever-escalating level of rudeness is proportional to the value we place on relationships, as well as our desire to avoid conflict. How did it happen that there is a need for the President of the United States to extend a call to citizens of our Country,  the greatest country in the world, to be civilized? Consider these first three PCI Civility Challenges:

1. bullying occurs not only among children at school but also with mothers - on the Internet!
2. road rage is all too commonplace
3. email, which is the most common form of communication today, can easily be misinterpreted.

The recent R-Rated name-calling incident in the National Football League by New York Jets cornerback, Antonio Cromartie, is and example of an adult acting inappropriately.  In a recent interview, the 26-year-old "professional" had some choice words for New England Patriots' quarterback. Tom Brady.

In sports, politics and life, you don't have to like your opponent; however, you should respect them. Inherent in the activity of "sports" implies being a "good sport" or, as  Mr. Webster suggests, "a person known for the manner of his acceptance of the rules of a game or of a difficult situation" - which Mr. Cromartie is clearly not.

Tom Brady shines, as always, as an athlete and a gentleman, as do his fellow comPatriots.

Chafee Center for International Business at Bryant University for inviting us to conduct an International Dining Protocol, Dining Savvy luncheon.  Gracie's Restaurant is a beautiful venue; service and staff are amazing.  Thank you, for this wonderful opportunity to meet and work with those preparing to and, currently conducting business overseas. Congratulations to the Massachusetts Conference for Women for hosting a completely stellar, thoroughly inspirational, fabulously motivational conference and, for attracting unprecedented attendance of over 6700 women!  The speakers were sensational and, inspiring.

Being a part of and among so many amazing women and, individual and collective talent was exhilarating.  The networking opportunities, business contacts, entrepreneurial possibilities were virtually limitless.The mood and the mode was upbeat, positive, high energy and enthusiastic.

I was humbled and honoured to have been among these amazing, accomplished, driven and  resourceful women from our prosperous past, present and 'fearlessly resilient' future business world leaders.  Once again, huge congratulations on a most successful Massachusetts Conference for Women!
